Beef Performance & Carcass Quality Contest offered at 2012 the Ohio State Fair

The 7th Annual Beef Performance and Carcass Quality Contest (BPCQ) will be conducted as part of the 2012 Junior Market Beef Show at the Ohio State Fair. Ohio youth who enroll in market beef projects and the BPCQ Contest participate in a program that rewards them for producing cattle that excel in industry-based value traits such as growth rate and carcass quality. This is an excellent chance for youth exhibitors to showcase real-world experiences in feeding and marketing beef cattle.

The BPCQ Contest will evaluate the combination of growth and carcass characteristics which add value to a market beef animal.  The carcass characteristics merit adjustments will be assigned using actual industry marketing grids and the final rank will be determined by carcass value gained per day in the contest.

The BPCQ cattle will be shown in a separate live show class at the Junior Market Beef Show during the Ohio State Fair, or may be shown in breed classes.  Exhibitors of the Live Champion and Reserve Champion will have the option of competing for overall Ohio State Fair Junior Market Beef Champion.  All cattle entered into the BPCQ Contest will be harvested at a cooperating packer to be evaluated and ranked.

Cattle must be weighed and identified between December 1, 2011 to January 15, 2012, at various locations around the state.  Individuals should contact their county 4-H Extension professional or FFA Advisor to make arrangements for weigh-ins.  Youth can enter either a steer or heifer into the show, and as many as eight animals can initially be identified.  All other Ohio State Fair Beef Show rules apply.

More information about the Beef Performance and Carcass Quality Contest and county tag requests can be obtained by contacting Mr. Kyle Culp at culp.1045@osu.edu or 614-247-8976.
